His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa gives six talks to a Western and Chinese audience on Gampopa's The Jewel Ornament of Liberation.   This classic text illuminates the spiritual journey of Buddhism in a manner that is highly accessible to a lay audience.  Filmed at the 2004 Kagyu Monlam, the Karmapa tells the life story of Gampopa and interprets his teachings in a uniquely engaging and insightful manner.

The 17th Gyalwa Karmapa
The lineage of the Karmapas originated in the twelfth century in Tibet.  The first Karmapa, Tusum Khyenpa, was Gampopa's principal disciple.  Since that time they have led the Karma Kagyu Order of Tibetan Buddhism, and were the first line of Tulkus, incarnate beings who choose the circumstances of their own rebirth.  The XVII Karmapa was born in Tibet in 1985, and discovered according to a letter of prediction left by his predecessor.  His Holiness made a dramatic escape from Tibet in the winter of 2000. He now lives in India.

Filmed in the winter of 2003-4, this documentary features His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa as he leads a nine day prayer ceremony called the Kagyu Monlam.  From his throne under the historic Bodhi Tree in Bodhgaya, the place of the Sakyamuni Buddha's enlightenment, the Karmapa performs ceremonies and ritual empowerments, accompanied by high Lamas of the Kagyu Order of Tibetan Buddhism.  A vivid and intimate portrait of Tibetan Buddhism at this holiest of sites includes commentary by the Karmapa.
